These are the folks that need to be screened for Vitamin D deficiency according to the Endocrine Society. Keep in mind they stated that “20-100% of the population may be deficient” in the same article.
- African-American and Hispanic children and adults
- Pregnant and lactating women
- Older adults with history of falls
- Older adults with history of nontraumatic fractures
- Obese children and adults (BMI>30 kg/m2)
- Use of medications
- Antiseizure medications
- Glucocorticoids
- AIDS medications
- Antifungals, e.g. ketoconazole
- Cholestyramine
- Malabsorption syndromes
- Cystic fibrosis
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Crohn’s disease
- Bariatric surgery
- Radiation enteritis
- Rickets
- Osteomalacia
- Chronic kidney disease
- Hepatic failure
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Granuloma-forming disorders
- Sarcoidosis
- Tuberculosis
- Histoplasmosis
- Coccidiomycosis
- Berylliosis
- Some Lymphomas
