Vitamin D screening

These are the folks that need to be screened for Vitamin D deficiency according to the Endocrine Society.  Keep in mind they stated that “20-100% of the population may be deficient” in the same article.

  • African-American and Hispanic children and adults
  • Pregnant and lactating women
  • Older adults with history of falls
  • Older adults with history of nontraumatic fractures
  • Obese children and adults (BMI>30 kg/m2)
  • Use of medications
    • Antiseizure medications
    • Glucocorticoids
    • AIDS medications
    • Antifungals, e.g. ketoconazole
    • Cholestyramine
  • Malabsorption syndromes
    • Cystic fibrosis
    • Inflammatory bowel disease
    • Crohn’s disease
    • Bariatric surgery
    • Radiation enteritis
  • Rickets
  • Osteomalacia
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Hepatic failure
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Granuloma-forming disorders
    • Sarcoidosis
    • Tuberculosis
    • Histoplasmosis
    • Coccidiomycosis
    • Berylliosis
  • Some Lymphomas
